0 Morphological Evolution of Galaxies to z ∼ 4

چکیده
Galaxies have clearly evolved since the universe was 1 Gyr old, but methods to trace and quantify this evolution are still in their infancy. In this paper I demonstrate that with the careful use of a ‘physical morphology’ it is possible to determine quantitatively how the process of galaxy evolution is occurring out to z ∼ 4. Using a system of parameters that traces star formation and galaxy interactions, I show how distinct galaxy populations at high-z can be identified in deep high-resolution optical and NIR images. These tools are also used to measure a potential merger fraction of galaxies from 0 < z < 4. If these methods are reliable, as is suggested by a local galaxy calibration, the merger fraction of galaxies scales α (1+z), peaks near z ∼ 2, and declines thereafter. I also discuss how this system is likely part of the ultimate physical classification of galaxies.

THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENT ON MORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION AT 0 < z < 1.2 IN THE COSMOS SURVEY
We explore the evolution of the morphology-density relation using the COSMOS Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and previous cluster studies. The Gini parameter measured in a Petrosian aperture is found to be an effective way of selecting early-type galaxies free from systematic effects with redshift. We find that galaxies are transformed from late(spiral and irregular) to early-type (E+S0) gala...
متن کاملEvolution of Galaxies in Clusters
We use new models of stellar population synthesis to estimate the fraction of stars formed during the last major bursts of star formation in E/S0 galaxies in low-redshift clusters (z ∼ < 0.4) from the spectral signatures of intermediate-age stars. We find that the mass fraction of stars formed in late bursts in early-type galaxies in clusters must have decreased smoothly with redshift, from abo...
متن کاملHST / WFPC 2 morphologies and bar structures of field galaxies at 0 . 4 < z < 1 ⋆
To address how the galaxy Hubble sequence is established and what physical processes are involved, we studied morphological properties and internal structures of field galaxies in the past (0.4 < z < 1). In addition to structural parameters derived from bulge+disk decomposition, Zheng et al. (2004) introduced color maps in recognizing galaxies and properly classified morphologies of 36 luminous...
متن کاملEvolution in the Disks and Bulges of Group Galaxies since z = 0 . 4 Sean
We present quantitative morphology measurements of a sample of optically selected group galaxies at 0.3 < z < 0.55 using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the gim2d surface brightness–fitting software package. The group sample is derived from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Redshift survey (CNOC2) and follow-up Magellan spectroscopy. W...
متن کاملThe evolution of the galaxy B-band rest-frame morphology to z ∼ 2: new clues from the K20/GOODS sample
We present a detailed analysis of the evolution of the rest-frame B-band morphology of K-selected galaxies with 0 < z < 2.5. This work is based on the K20 spectroscopic sample (Ks < 20) located within the Chandra Deep Field South area, coupled with the public deep GOODS HST+ACS multi-band optical imaging available in that field. Thanks to the spectroscopic completeness of this catalog reaching ...
